and guess what we saw when we entered the bar?!

a screen that says 'welcome to cavern mig ayesa'. tang ina! tang ina talaga! fucker kung fucker! andun sya!!! waahhh!!! at dahil may we will rock you hang over pa kame, nagtatanong tanong kame kung andun ba talaga sya. di maconfirm ng mga bar people. di daw nila kilala kung sino un.

dahil cheapos kame, cheapest ticket ang binili namin sa we will rock you musical. as in para na talaga silang langgam nung pinapanood namen. buti na lang electrifying ang bawat number, at feeling sulit pa din ang $350 namin. nag-iisip pa kame kung hihintayin namin sila paglabas pero umuwi na lang kame.

luckily, ung band na magpeperform sa cavern, is the same band na nagperform sa conrad. so medyo close na kame. they confirmed that he is indeed performing. two songs! waaaahhhh!!!

you wouldn't believe how excited we were.

thursday, june 19 (happy birthday dr. rizal!)

kuya jong called me, asking if jason abalos is good enough to be brought to hk for the tfc event. since gma and smart did their event the previous sunday, their mortal enemies abs-cbn and globe would give them a run for their money. i refused the idea. so he gave a list of the possible stars whom i feel good about. grabe no, nasa aking kamay ang kanilang tadhana. who are they? jason abalos, aj dee, chad peralta, joross gamboa, matt evans. sasabihin ko pa lang na iba iba kase sila ng forte. ung isa sa sayaw, ung isa kanta, ung isa magpapahulog lang talaga ng panty. he called me again and hastened me to give my decision. humirit ako, pwede bang si jake cuenca? o kahit si derek ramsey! mukha silang masarap! pero di daw sila pwede. haayyy...

he commissioned me to become a vip coordinator - do the same things as in when randy santiago came over. as usual taga-harang sa mga excited na mga ale pag nakakita ng gwapo. anyway, sino ang pinili ko?

first is the comedian chocoleit. grabe ang skin nya. knock on wood.

then the singing miracle, anton diva. magaling talaga sya kumanta. napanood ko pa dati ung life story nya. sa mkm ata un.

and it's just getting started! who's the next guest? who's the next guest?

i never liked his rapping. pero iba pag napanood mo sya live. magugustuhan mo bigla. ang saya ng mga kababayan, cold summer nights, kaleidescope world!

at dahil kapansin pansin na merong maliit na batang babae na kuha ng kuha ng pictures. nagkindatan pa kame. nagpose sya for me tapos labas ako ng dila. ayun, kindat naman sya. no, i didn't go to the stage. nanlilimahid talaga ako nakakahiya naman.

sino ang susunod? sino ang susunod?

concert queen, pops fernandez. i never liked her. i still don't understand how she got her title because i don't see her singing special any way you look at it.

but she's undeniably sexy. you wouldn't think she gave birth to two giant boys courtesy of martin nievera

of course you have to save the best for last. so sino ang finale? sinooo??? sige clue:

ano ba... SIDE A!!! oo buhay pa sila! naalala ko dati nanood pa kame ng concert nila sa expo sa clark. we bought the cheapest ticket but we managed to go down unscathed - as in below the stage getting wild.

meet the boys of this band

grabe di pa din sila kumukupas. they really brought the house down! lahat talaga sumasayaw! magaling talaga! magaling! you'll fall in love when you hear them sing forevermore!

the last member of the band that i specially saved for last?

sam milby? hehe?

if i heard it right, his name is ivo. crush ko sya! grabe ang boses nya! kinanta nya ang always be my baby david cook version at ang pinay ni florante! gusto ko syang iuwi.

flickr night

this pales in comparison with the flickr event last year. it's actually a sin to compare them. this year is so bleh. no interaction amongst guests. bleh food. no raffle. but it's another polaroid galore. yey!

what's the best thing about hosting the ball?

IT'S GETTING THE BEST ACCESS TO THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL THE FOLLOWING DAY! since i hosted the ball pro bono, what better way to repay me but to give me backstage pass, together with all the peeps i could bring?

and by 'best access', i meant having the liberty to photograph the guests from manila as much as i want without getting intimidated by the security ladies.

who were the guests who came over and did some performances?

oh you wouldn't believe what a day it had been!

first guest: arnel ignacio. he's a real good comedian. his punchlines are really hilarious.

next guest: the little playboy janno gibbs. he's a good singer. finally i heard 'pinakamagandang lalaki' and 'ipagpatawad mo' once again

last one: jericho rosales. takte, crush ko na sya kahit nung mr pogi days nya pa lang. pinilit ko pa sa jologs quiz show dati na si charlie sheen ang ginagaya nya. then came the psy days. pati ang sana'y wala ng wakas. buti na lang break na sila ni heart. nung lumabas sya ng stage, grabe, mawiwindang ka talaga. para talagang gusto mong pilipitin ang hita mo sa sobrang kilig! he asked the audience kung sino ang may bf. di talaga ako nagtaas ng kamay kahit katabi ko si b! ganun talaga ang magnetic powers nya! hypnosis to the nth level! he doesn't have a flawless complexion but there's something about his smile that will draw you into him and you'll be weak to resist.

now the three of them:

echo, let me be your heart! hehe...

ayaw mo maniwala? o eto ang prueba!

THE event

then came the big night. i had to do my make up because i didn't want to spend for a salon. they were asking for $250 for hair and make up. a competitive price based on hk standards. but i just couldn't take the fact that i am using make up that has been used by others. can you imagine the sponge being used for other people's pores to be used on you? that's just disgusting. anyway, i decided to go for the 'simple' look. well, who am i kidding? of course i cannot go any simpler! i don't even have a lipstick! i only use face powder and lipgloss!

when i opened the doors of the function hall, i was like: woooh! fuck, it is that grand! everything was just first class to the slightest details. im so not for this. anyway, i had no choice but to go ahead. pota, si batman na ang bahala.

the theme is GLITZ AND GLAMOUR. the funtion hall is located at the lower ground floor. the staircase is full of rose petals plus a red carpet. they commissioned a gentleman who shall ask arriving guests what are they wearing. but i mean, who the hell cares? i bought mine in mongkong stall number ss122. hehe... and then they built 2 x 7 or 8 foot oscar award statues. it isn't 'the event' for nothing. i look underdressed, as expected. some of them looked like they were competing for a beauty pageant's long gown competition. as in ung sumasayad talaga sa sahig, at may korona pa! taob kung taob! haha! in the cocktail area there will be a photo taking where a flock of photographers shall take your pictures. paparazzi drama at its fullest.

i may be simple and look like a teenager celebrating her sweet sixteen, but i had the grandest entrance amongst all of them. the two guy hosts went to the stage first and after some punchlines, they said that it would be awkward if they don't have a female companion for the night. thus my walk of fame from the back - with matching spotlight and jazzy music. tunaw ang corona ng iba! haha!

there were some booboos like i called the sponsor of the event as phil alumni of hk instead of phil assoc of hk. and the very messy raffle draw. but overall i think i did a good job. the directors were thanking us for a job well done - and yes, even ms o. sa susunod kase ms o, wag manlait ng harap harapan, lalo na pag di mo kilala ung tao.

highlights of the night:
1. butuin escalante's performance. world class. individuals like her make you just proud to be a filipino
2. i won a gc! body glow scrub from a hk spa! yeba!
3. appearance of nanette inventor and janno gibbs
4. surprise visit of alfred vargas, paolo contis, angelica de la cruz, iwa moto, ehra madrigal
5. the fact that it's over and that i conquered my stage fright

sige na nga, pictures!

this is how i look like during the event. simple but not bad, eh? thank you to me for my make up

the next chapter

so we were given 5 days to prepare - basically to do our speeches, hunt outfits and calm our nerves.

day 1 i was introduced to my fellow emcees. from what i gathered, the original hosts were two gentlemen who have their own radio shows. but it seemed a bit awkward if the female species were not represented. so they got me. how convenient? oh, and don't forget that we got our respective demanding full time jobs!

i was able to meet the bosses of prime credit, pal, and jollibee. we even had our rehearsals and brainstorming sessions. everything was sorted out. the pal boss shall lend me her filipiniana dress. then two days before the event we were informed that filipiniana is not the way to go. even though it is an independence day ball, the theme of the event is GLITZ AND GLAMOUR. how patriotic, huh?!

so what to do now??? i don't have the dinero to spend for a $3k dress!

kuya jong said that we can meet the following day and shop in mong kok for a gown - during my lunch time! you know how strict my company is regarding lunch breaks. getting to mong kok takes about 20 minutes when i run throught the subway. and i was meeting a dutch customer before that. i relayed the story to my manager and she said it's ok for me to leave early. anyway, luckily we got something for a good price. he paid for it. now i just have to take care of the shoes, accessories and make-up. it seems that he got me and b as a package. while i was doing the showbiz part, b is doing the production stuff. he's one of the official photographers and preparing the props. don't we just make a good team? hehe...

for the next two nights we were running all throughout hk until midnight - don't forget that b needs to be presentable as well! we had to shop for his entire business attire. and don't forget strobe lights! or mock up cameras!

...next: 'the event'

the saga continues...

so there... i was ingnoring their calls. i never dared answer unknown numbers because i have this inability to refuse other people's requests. anyway, when they called me the previous day, i said they have a deadline. they need to confirm with me before saturday because i needed to prepare - ie, buy a dress and a pair of shoes, look for make up, etc. i successfully ignored phone calls until late in the evening of friday.

kuya jong called and of course i had to answer. he's the director of the pinoy events here in hk. i owed to him my sarah geronimo experience and the randy santiago gig. he said that he came from the meeting with the phil assoc of hk's board of directors and they mentioned that they are having a hard time getting back to me. he volunteered that he'd do it. he claimed to be a good friend of mine so it shouldn't be hard.

bottomline is -- i agreed. I AM HOSTING THE EVENT. shet! it's a mortal sin to refuse kuya jong after all the good things he had done. damn gratitude.

now i picture o's face seeing me up on stage. huh?! i still got in bitch! who gets the last laugh now?!

after i put the phone down, it suddenly struck me that i am a complete novice on this. the last time i spoke in public for more than one minute was when i gave my speech during grade school graduation. fucker, that's half a lifetime ago! it didn't turn out well so i've had stage fright ever since. but now there's no excuse for me to mess up. how can i become an expat if i am not even good at speaking? i stutter. my mind goes blank and i speak an unknown language. but expats are known for their borderless charms, aren't they? they should be good at adapting to different situations in front of different people of various races, shouldn't they?

shet.. shet..

next chapter to follow.

trauma

I better write this while everything is still fresh in my memory. These all started the day before our photography exhibit. While I was busily running last minute things for our little club, I met on the lift a gentleman whom I met when I hosted the TFC re-launch a couple of months back. I hastily invited him for our opening (his office is only one level up from the venue).

And then next day he called me to offer a hosting stint. A big WHY? Did they not see what a boring emcee I had been? They said they are having a hard time looking for a girl emcee and they were reminded of me because they thought I did a good job at the re-launch. Oh, and one more thing, it is ‘The Event’! It’s the most pretentious Pinoy event in Hong Kong. Think about one year preparation and I am not exaggerating! When you ask the regular guests, you will hear them say, ‘Oh I had this done by a so and so designer from Manila’. I forgot to mention about the entrance charge! It’s a staggering one thousand dollars! Imagine, just add a little more and you can pay for the monthly minimum wage in Pinas. You also have to account your outfit and the salon services. And you only spend it in one night.

Anyway, come OUR night, the opening of the photo exhibit. Notice that I emphasized on ‘our’. This is for the sole reason that it is my night, together with the other PPC-HK members. This time the spotlight is ours and we expect admiration for our works. The images are really good and we were there to receive compliments.

V (he guy I met at the lift) introduced me to one of directors of their association. She’s the only Pinoy barrister at law in Hong Kong (her winning cases I have yet to find out) and I think her profession affected her brain. The conversation went like this. She’s O. Note that this happened while I was talking to my other friend, K. So there are four people involved.

V: Hi Ms O, this is Blossom.
O: Hi Blossom
B: Oh yes, we have been introduced during the Randy Santiago event
O: Yes, I remember you.
V: Maam, sya po ung kinuhuha nating maging host for our ball.
B: Ahmmm… Wala pa po. First time ko lang po ung sa Randy Santiago
O: Hay naku V, hindi sya pwede! NO, NO, NO! I am putting down my foot here. She’s inexperienced! Maiintimidate sya sa mga tao dun! Maybe you don’t realize how big this event is. There are big people coming and I am sure you’ll get intimidated.
….(potang ina, 5 seconds of silence)….
K: (had some sense to salvage me from this traumatic experience on my night): Basta alam ko po, magaling si Blsm. Alam ko kaya nya yan…
O left.
V: Pabayaan mo sya. Ganyan talaga yan magbiro.
B: Oh..

I felt like I was in the set of Ally Mc Beal. Can you just pull somebody’s hair and picture graphically in your imagination? That’s what I felt. Why is this bitch ruining MY night? I’ve waited for this for a year and I don’t want any arrogant lawyer giving me a traumatic experience. I know she has a point – that I MAY be inexperienced. But she doesn’t know me – I may be bad at English but I am personable and charming. But of course for bitches like her, I can be an anti social. I am an anti social to annoying people.

Besides, I AM DOING THEM A FAVOR! I didn’t present myself. They hunted me. They checked our exhibit’s poster that’s why they were able to contact me. I seem to be an unknown figure so it took them a hard time to find my contact details. If it is indeed a big event, why don’t they hire professional emcees? Arrogant cheapos.

I have decided to ignore their calls. That’s my decision. I didn’t want to do anything for people like her. To hell with her. To hell with their big event.

To be continued….

Pinoy arts fest in Hong Kong
KRIPOTKIN By Alfred A. Yuson
Monday, June 9, 2008
On June 20, the latest book on National Artist Bencab’s art, BenCab: Nude Drawings, will be launched at Substation: A Home for the Arts, on 45 Armenian Street, Singapore (beside the Asian Civilization Museum).

This will be in conjunction with the opening of a two-week exhibit of 25 of the works featured in the book — all fairly recent drawings of female nudes, in different media, mostly pastel, charcoal, acrylic on paper, done from 2005 to 2007.

Also to be launched at the event organized by Singapore-based broadcaster and Bencab collector Rico Hizon is Tabayag: Lime Containers of the Cordilleras (from the Bencab collection), with photographs by Wig Tysman. This National Book Award winner was published by Bencab himself and released in Manila in 2006. A selection of the objects that are the subject of the book will also go on display, together with Wig’s photos.

BenCab: Nude Drawings is designed by RayVi Sunico, with text by this writer, and published by Anvil Publishing Inc. The Manila launch will be at 4 p.m. on June 28 at Silverlens Gallery at 2320 Pasong Tamo Ext., marking the last week of the artist’s current exhibit there billed as “Related Images,” which opened on May 31.

The way our artists keep on making waves in Singapore, as recently seen in the successful auction sales of works by up-and-coming painters, continues to confirm our early prognosis that Filipino visual artists, performers and filmmakers are set to dominate the Southeast Asian region when it comes to art and entertainment.

Singapore and Hong Kong are steadily being taken over by our strike force of visual artists.

We just received good word from our friend Rex Aguado, co-publisher and editor-in-chief of the impressive Review Asia monthly magazine, that his efforts at organizing Filipino expatriate artists continue to bear fruit.

Two years ago, in June 2006, Rex spearheaded the staging of the first Philippine Arts Festival in Hong Kong, billed as “Unang Sulyap.” That was followed by last year’s fest, “Estilo” — also featuring a series of art exhibits and other cultural events spread out over several weeks.

This year, the annual fair that focuses on Filipino creativity continues with “Tricolor: A Cultural Celebration” — the heading given the third Philippine Arts Festival, which formally opened at 1 p.m. yesterday, Sunday, at The Peak Galleria.

Rex Aguado issues this invite to all Filipinos residing in or who may be visiting Hong Kong within the coming weeks:

“To our friends in the community and beyond, please do visit any — if not all — of our shows across the city this month and into July. We have prepared a bountiful harvest of around eight exhibitions and events around Hong Kong, with the help of the Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong, the Philippine Association of Hong Kong, and the generous galleries and venues that have offered their spaces to our artists and photographers.

“This is the first time that the Philippine Arts Festival is being held under the auspices of the newly formed Philippine Arts and Cultural Society (Hong Kong) — a group of Filipino artists, photographers, creative types and their friends and patrons. The society is also planning a host of other activities to promote Filipino creativity throughout the year — every year!

“For our June 8 opening, for instance — and on every Sunday thereafter for the month of June — cultural groups from the Filipino community here in Hong Kong (consisting mostly of overseas Filipino workers) will be entertaining the crowd at The Peak Galleria. Our kababayans have offered to perform for free to share their culture with the community, but we are appealing for any financial assistance to cover the cost of transporting our performers and their merienda after the show.

“The society is still in the process of setting up its financial system, but you can send your donation (preferably in HK dollars) to HSBC account 133 133298 833 (my account). Please e-mail me at rex.aguado@gmail.com or Aldrin Monsod at aldrinmonsod@yahoo.com or Rowena Gonzales atwena55@yahoo.com about your donations and we will acknowledge and record them astutely. We will be reporting all donations and the donors (unless anonymity is requested) in our website at www.philartsfesthk.com — which is also your official source of updates regarding our festival this year. We hope you could join us in this wonderfully enriching and enlightening event, and help us share the cultural bounty of the Philippines.”

The series of activities actually began on June 3 with “Tiny Studio + — A Live Painting Performance” at the Sara Sene Gallery, 5A, Winner Bldg., 27-37 D’Aguilar St., Lan Kwai Fong, with featured artist Joel Eugenio Epistola Ferraris starting to paint randomly small images on large blank canvas panels, with the objective of completing a mural-sized art piece by June 24.

The artist says it will be all about his experiences as a visual artist “forced by circumstances to live and do art inside ‘luxurious boxes’ in this world city,” where he arrived in 1996.

Last Thursday, June 5, an exhibit of photographs by members of the Pinoy Photographers Club-Hong Kong opened at the Philippine Consulate General, 14th Floor, United Centre, 95 Queensway. Billed as “ex-press,” the show will last until June 19. Participating photographers are: Michael Azucena, Victor Bautista, Gerard Boragay, Bryan Chanco, Butch Durias, Baban Gozum, Wilbert Jarata, Ric Manzano, Jojo Mamangun, Peter Mercado, Phey Palma, Eli Remolona, Mario Rivera, David Roquel, Ben Rosagazo, (my name) , Aldrin Victoriano, John Villavicencio and Joshua Viray.

Last Saturday, June 6, a four-man show titled “Chronicles of Pain Colored” — featuring the works of Justo Cascante III, Charlie Co, Arnel S. Agawin and Bobit Segismundo — opened at Osage Soho on 45 Caine Road, Lower Ground Shop 1, corner Old Bailey St., Soho, Central. The show lasts till June 24.

I’m familiar with the works of Co and Agawin, two of our more accomplished painters who are still relatively young, and as the notes on the show mention, “have a penchant for visual narratives, expressive symbolism and mystical drama.” Along with Cascante and Segismundo, they are seen to be “politicized, not just in terms of national issues but also in the ways they deal with personal relationships and all that these entail — distress, betrayal, loss, frustration, exhaustion and pain.”

From June 13 to 27, another group show featuring four Filipino artists, titled “Alternatibo,” will be on exhibit at Floren Gallery, 52 Po Hing Fong St., SoHo, Sheung Wan. The artists are Rene Caintic, Noel de Guzman, Han Lualhati, and Dani Packer.

The PAHK Ball and Art Auction will be conducted on June 14 at the Conrad Ballroom. The next morning and afternoon, on June 15, sketching sessions, art installations, a drawing clinic for kids and an amateur painting contest will be undertaken by all of the festival participants at Chater Road and Garden.

From June 16 to 28, in the evenings, Armida Adaza supervises “Acting for Non-Actors,” a 16-hour acting workshop spread over three weeks, at the Peng Chau Municipal Services Building at Peng Chau.

From June 19 to July 3, featured at Asia Fine Art, G/F, 12 Sik On St., 99 Queen’s Road East, Wanchai is “Take Five,” another group show, with Filipino artists Jun Cambel, Genaro Gomez, Ben Guia, Charito Helgason, and Manuel Rubio.

Opening on June 26 and lasting till July 10 at Karin Weber Gallery, ground floor, 20 Aberdeen St., Central is a one-man show by Noel de Guzman, titled “Cyclic Circles.”

On June 29, from 3 to 7pm, “Dramatherapy Workshop for Helpers” will be conduccted by Mida Zada at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre Rehearsal Hall.

The photo show “ex-press” moves to The Fringe Club fotogalerie, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, from July 3 to 15.

And from July 4 to 31, Sara Sene Gallery features “It Runs in the Blood: The Ferraris Artists Group Show” — with Joel, Nelson, Jocelyn, Noel, Egar with Sally and Pamela Reyes-Ferraris, and the special participation of the Ferraris children (David, Daniel, Jemimah, Kulay, Neo and Violet) and the Ferraris-Merel kids (Ronnie, Faith and Joseph). Quite uniquely, a clan show it is.

So is the entire Pinoy arts fest in Hong Kong in the next several weeks. Do try to catch it, compaƱeros y viajeros!

past, present, future

i upgraded my yahoo mail and now i'm using the newer version. now it's so much easier to navigate. finally i was able to delete the 600 unread emails without clicking the next page button to get the succeeding 25 emails. it's like using an outlook that could easily arrange the email by sender, subject, date, etc. i know it's been there for a long time now but i only found out just last week. read: complete tech idiot.

i cleared my inbox before i left for hk. when i arrived here i wanted to start anew, basically read new stuff from people in a different perspective. it's nice to be unaffected by their qualms yet still get excited with the new things going on in their lives. i think that's one of the advantages when you're away. when you're in pinas you get too attached with your family's and friends' problems. even your neighbors' or the neighbors' dog's or even the starlet's that you see on the boobtube. when you only have to fend for yourself, you may not have anybody to depend on but at least you learn to stand up on your feet. you are responsible for your own action and no matter the outcome, you know that there's no better way to do than following what you think is right.

homesickness is a pain but it's actually more peaceful here.

it's funny reading may inbox from july 06 til now. you could see the evolution of my relationship with people. i read ex #1's emails about our supposed illicit set-up. then i saw ex #2's sorry letter which never affected me at all.. then the indian guy's jerky emails. then mine and b's purely friends moments.

i know i sound like a broken record here, but i now believe that things happen for a reason. imagine if i gave in to ex #1's unfair set-up, or if i'm still bitter at ex #2's happy life and worst if i still give in to the jerky indian! i wouldn't have met b and enjoy life now.

i know the future is uncertain, but im sure that when i read my inbox in two more years, there will be lots of interesting stories to look back to.
